How Many Totes Make a Custom Storage Rack Worthwhile?

There is no universal tote count at which a custom rack suddenly becomes worthwhile. Six frequently used bins in an awkward stack can create a bigger daily problem than twenty archive bins that are already easy to reach. You can test the value of direct access without owning the rack. For one week, give every keeper tote a temporary address and log every retrieval. Use a note on your phone or a sheet by the garage door. Record the bin used, objects moved, time spent finding it, where it was set down, and whether it returned to its assigned location.
