How to Plan a Tote Rack Around Garage Door Tracks and Openers
A garage wall can look open when the door is closed and become crowded as soon as the door rises. Tracks, rollers, hinges, opener rails, arms, cables, handles, lights, sensors, and the moving door itself all occupy space that a floor-only measurement misses. A tote rack that technically fits below one component may still block inspection, place a bin in the door’s path, or make an upper tote awkward to remove.

Find the lowest point by testing the full travel
The lowest visible track is not always the limiting height. A curved opener arm can dip below the rail. A hinge or door reinforcement can pass closer to storage while the door rounds the track. With storage kept clear and no one standing under the moving door, operate it through a complete cycle while observing from the side. This position can use otherwise empty wall length, but it requires careful checks of top-row retrieval, track brackets, vehicle-door clearance, sensors, and technician access. Test the actual tote at the rack’s planned depth. A shallow wall gap does not prove that a loaded bin can be removed comfortably.
On the back wall, beyond the open door
A back-wall rack may avoid horizontal tracks, yet conflict with the opener rail, open-door edge, attic access, workbench, freezer, stairs, or the approach needed to park. Confirm that a person can remove a tote while vehicles are in their normal positions and that the open garage door does not reduce light or overhead working space.
Between bays or beside the door opening
