How to Plan a Tote Rack Around Parked Vehicles
An empty garage can make almost any storage wall look generous. The useful test begins after the household’s vehicles are parked in their normal positions, mirrors are where drivers leave them, doors are opened, groceries are carried inside, and someone tries to remove a loaded tote. A rack that technically fits between two marks can still make daily parking or storage frustrating.
Before approving a custom rack, test the complete system: rack depth, tote movement, vehicle envelope, walking path, door swing, charging or power equipment, and a stable place to set a bin down. This guide shows how to collect those real-world constraints without pretending that one universal clearance works for every garage or vehicle.
This is a layout-planning guide, not structural, electrical, fire-code, or installation advice. Follow the rack builder’s requirements and the vehicle, charger, garage-door, and building-equipment manufacturers’ instructions. Preserve required access and have qualified professionals address project-specific safety or code questions.
Measure the parked routine, not the empty room
Start with each vehicle parked as it is on an ordinary evening. Do not center it perfectly for the measurement if that is not how the garage is normally used. Mark the tire positions with removable painter’s tape, photograph the parking arrangement, and note which driver pulls in forward or backs in.
Repeat the observation more than once if parking position varies. A layout based on a single unusually tidy attempt may leave no tolerance for a rainy arrival, a new driver, a roof box, or a slightly different stopping point. The goal is not to excuse careless parking; it is to give the design an honest operating envelope.
For the rest of the room—including wall width, ceiling height, trim, outlets, and tote dimensions—use the garage and tote measuring worksheet. Keep the vehicle observations on that same sketch so the rack is not designed from a separate, incomplete set of numbers.
Draw a vehicle envelope instead of one side-clearance line
A vehicle is not a fixed rectangle in daily use. Doors swing, a liftgate rises, mirrors project, passengers turn sideways, and cargo moves through the space. On your floor plan, show both the parked outline and the areas used while entering, exiting, loading, and unloading.
Test these points with the actual vehicle:
- the widest body or mirror position at the proposed rack height;
- the driver and passenger door paths at normal opening positions;
- the path used for a child seat, mobility aid, pet, backpack, or work bag;
- the rear hatch, tailgate, trunk, or sliding-door operating area;
- the route from the vehicle to the house and overhead garage door;
- any charging cable, wall connector, cord hanger, or fuel-door access;
- the clearance needed around manufacturer-specified equipment and controls; and
- the space occupied by seasonal attachments such as a bike rack or roof carrier.
Write down what each dimension represents. “Thirty inches from wall to closed door” and “thirty inches of usable walking space with the door open” are not interchangeable measurements. A builder needs to know whether a figure describes a parked object, a moving part, or a human route.
Test the worst everyday door, not only the driver’s door
The door nearest the rack may not be the one used most often. A parent may need the rear passenger door fully usable for a car seat. Groceries may leave through a hatch. A work vehicle may need access to a side compartment. Open every door that the household expects to use inside the garage and watch its full path at several heights.
Do not assume a door can lightly touch a tote or rack as a parking guide. Repeated contact can damage the vehicle, label, tote, or rack finish, and a partially removed bin may project farther than the stored face. Plan a layout that works without using stored items as bumpers.
If a household member needs extra transfer or mobility space, treat that as a primary design input rather than leftover clearance. Measure with the actual mobility aid and normal assistance routine where appropriate. A narrower rack, shorter run, different wall, or fewer openings may produce a much more usable garage.
Include the tote’s complete retrieval movement
Rack depth is only the beginning. A tote has to move from its opening into the aisle, clear any supports, remain under the user’s control, and reach a stable landing surface. A vehicle beside the rack can interrupt that movement even when it does not touch the stored tote.
Use the exact tote model, loaded to a representative normal weight. With the proposed rack face marked on the floor or wall, rehearse the motion at low, middle, and high planned positions without lifting beyond a safe and comfortable range. Do not climb, stand on a tote, or improvise a loaded rack mock-up.
Look for turning, twisting, or side-stepping. If the bin must be rotated around a mirror, carried over a charging cord, balanced near a vehicle, or set in the driving lane, the plan is incomplete. Create a dedicated tote landing zone
A direct-access rack prevents the need to unstack several bins, but the selected tote still needs somewhere to go. Identify a level, stable landing surface outside vehicle movement, door swings, and walking routes. It should be available when the garage is in its normal parked condition—not only after a car is moved to the driveway.
Avoid making the hood, roof, trunk, or an open vehicle door the default landing surface. Also avoid placing a tote where it can roll, tip, obstruct a required path, or be hit when a vehicle moves. If no practical landing zone remains, consider a different rack location, fewer slots, or a shorter rack that preserves working space at one end.

Map charging cables and wall equipment before storage
Electric-vehicle charging introduces more than the charger’s visible box. Record the cable route in use and at rest, connector access, controls, indicators, guards, and every clearance or mounting requirement in the manufacturer’s instructions. A rack must not cover equipment, force a cable through an opening, create a trip route, or become a place to hang a cord unless the complete arrangement is specifically designed and approved for that use.
The same rule applies to electrical panels, outlets, switches, plumbing, meters, water equipment, HVAC components, and emergency controls. Do not relocate, extend, enclose, or work around electrical equipment based on a storage sketch. Mark it and preserve the required access. Review where not to place a rack around utilities and access areas before treating every open wall as storage capacity.
Check overhead conflicts with vehicles in place
A roofline, open hatch, roof rack, cargo box, or antenna can change how the garage door and storage plan interact. Operate the overhead door through a complete normal cycle with the garage otherwise clear and safe, then mark tracks, springs, opener hardware, handles, sensors, wiring, and moving envelopes. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions and keep people and belongings away from moving components.
A tall rack may fit beneath the ceiling yet conflict with a track, opener rail, open liftgate, or the path used to remove an upper tote. Measure at both ends of the proposed rack because ceilings, floors, and hardware may not be uniform. Plan for the vehicle that may replace the current one
A custom rack can outlast a household’s current car. That does not mean guessing every future vehicle dimension, but it is worth identifying likely changes before using the last available inches. Ask whether the next vehicle may be taller, longer, wider, equipped with different doors, or charged on the opposite side.
Choose an intentional margin based on the household’s plans and the builder’s design—not a generic number copied from another garage. If a vehicle change is expected soon, record the candidate manufacturer dimensions and operating needs before finalizing the rack. Preserving a modest flexible zone may be more valuable than filling the wall with one additional tote opening.
Run a parking-and-retrieval rehearsal
Before ordering, stage a low-risk full routine with tape and lightweight empty containers. Do not construct a makeshift rack or suspend totes. Mark the proposed rack face, depth, ends, and no-storage zones, then complete this sequence:
- Park each vehicle using the normal driver and direction of travel.
- Open the doors, hatch, or tailgate used during a typical day.
- Walk the route between vehicle, house door, and overhead door.
- Place the exact tote at the planned rack face and rehearse a controlled retrieval path.
- Move the tote to the designated landing zone without crossing a cable or squeezing past a vehicle.
- Return the tote and confirm the label can be read from the aisle.
- Operate approved equipment normally while keeping clear of moving parts.
- Repeat with the least favorable ordinary parking position.
Ask more than one regular user to perform the walkthrough. Different heights, reach, mobility, and parking habits expose constraints that one person may miss. If the test depends on everyone turning sideways, closing a needed door, moving the car, or carrying a tote farther than expected, revise the layout before fabrication.
Give the rack builder a useful vehicle-clearance packet
A compact packet is more useful than a message that says “two cars still need to fit.” Include:
- a dimensioned garage sketch with the normal tire positions;
- vehicle make/model/year or measured exterior dimensions, without assuming published dimensions describe every accessory;
- photos from the overhead-door opening, house entry, and both rack ends;
- door, hatch, mirror, and routine human-movement envelopes;
- charger and cable locations plus other wall and overhead equipment;
- the proposed tote landing zone and retrieval route;
- exact tote models, outside dimensions, and representative packed weights;
- expected vehicle changes or accessibility needs; and
- questions about placement, loading, anchoring, inspection, and the builder’s required clearances.
Custom sizing is useful here because the openings can be planned from the actual totes and usable wall—not because a custom label makes an overfilled garage safe. Apply the test to the actual Utah County garage

Keep snowmelt and vehicle drip routes away from the rack footprint where practical, and address water or floor problems at their source rather than relying on closed totes.
Final vehicle-and-rack checklist
- Park every vehicle in its ordinary position and mark realistic variation.
- Record mirrors, doors, hatch, cargo, passenger, and mobility-aid movement.
- Mark the full rack footprint plus every tote’s retrieval path.
- Reserve a stable landing zone outside vehicle and walking routes.
- Document chargers, cables, utilities, controls, and overhead equipment.
- Test the routine with exact totes and all regular garage users.
- Allow intentionally for likely vehicle or household changes.
- Send one reconciled measurement packet to the rack builder.
